MX’in’ it up
Mondays on ‘Track’ in 2010”

In 2008, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and its “Man on
Fire,” Roy Willie, exploded onto the track and scorched all those who
dared get near him. In his Zen trance, he sought only apexes, or, as he
refers to them, the “little blue touch papers,” turning each one into cinders
with a mere glance. He took the Championship by the scruff of its fiery
neck, and when he was done, he took the coveted “Track Day Champion” trophy back
to his volcanic lair, and the words, Roy “Rocket” Willie, were em-blaze-oned forever
in MX-5 History.
In 2009, those brave enough,
and still healthy enough, slowly came out to fight the “Global Track Day
Championship Crisis.” The hunger, too, burned within them, but this year
fire was to be their fiercest foe, not their ally. The drought-declared
MX-5 Club of Queensland was about to witness a cyclone with high winds and
flooding rains. Yes, the “Man on Fire” was about to be quelled by
the “Man of Fire” as Mark Seville aimed his fireman’s hose
directly at the hearts of those who stood in his way, quenching their flames
with his flooding reins of cyclonic ‘Red-5’ terror. A few tried to “Ward”
him off. “Penelope Pussycat” (Wendy Merefield-Ward) dug her claws
in, her fur matted, her eyes flashing brightly in the darkness created by the
storm. “Pepé Le Pew” (Chris Ward) waded into the turgid waters,
fighting the foam and froth, struggling to keep his head above water, but alas
they, too, were vanquished by the “Seville Storm.”
The cyclone has now
abated. Pompeii and Herculaneum stand again in the sunshine.
The great god “Ahura Mazda” demands the “Gods of ‘Right Line’ Serendipity” to
bring him a new Monarch. One who is strong and tenuous, who is lithe, one
who is true of heart, for there can be no other who can hold the trophy
aloft. Will Fire or Water once again prevail, or will our year be rocked
by an “Earth Goddess,” or perhaps there will be a fresh “Supply of
Air.”
Can you visualise yourself
receiving the Track Day Championship Trophy at the end of the year like those
who have come before you? Can you drive
consistently? Can you improve your skill and your times at Queensland
Raceways? Whether you think you know it or not, the real test is in the
‘doing’. And, the only way to know that for sure is to get out there and
try it!!!!! You receive points just for showing up, so
consistent participation can certainly assist you in your quest for the
prize. Please read on to see how you can take your place in MX-5 Club of
Queensland history . . .
Track Days are for everyone,
men and women, alike. Just ask Wendy Merefield-Ward! She took
the Championette Trophy last year. Come
out and have a go! If you aren’t sure if it is for you, come out to a
Track Day and have a look at how much fun you could be having. It won’t
cost you a thing to watch. Besides, we can always use some volunteers to
wave flags and marshal all of the track activities. Who knows, perhaps you
may even follow in Kyle Brown’s footsteps. He came out to watch and
wave flags. He managed to stay for an hour before running home to get some
clothes so he could go out and play too.
If you are planning to
volunteer, we would love to have you, so please R.S.V.P. your intentions to do
so to our Competition Secretary, Geoff Marsh. We can always use the
assistance to make the day run more smoothly and maximise track time for all of
the participants.
Please don’t miss out on this
great opportunity! Start the year off right by being at the first Track
Day session of the year . . . “when is it?” you ask . . . The
first Track Day is on Monday, 1st March, 2010. Put in for
your RDO today!! There are still a few spots left for this session
. . . register now . . . it is less than a week away.
As per last year, the Club
has booked a total of five (5) Track Days through the 2010 Calendar Year.
Three (3) of these days will be at Lakeside Park Raceway, and two (2) will be at
Queensland Raceway (QR—Ipswich
).
The dates are as
follows:
Monday, March
1st 2010 – PM Session – Lakeside Park
Monday, 3rd May, 2010
(Public Holiday) – PM Session - Lakeside Park
Monday, 5th July,
2010– PM Session - Ipswich
Monday, 6th September,
2010– PM Session - Ipswich
Monday, 1st November,
2010– PM Session - Lakeside Park
Please note these on your
calendar, now!!!
We will, once again, have
sessions on the white board in the briefing room for all the new attendees and
for those who have participated before but just want to hear it all
again. Remember,
this is all about members having fun and gaining valuable knowledge and working
on improving their car control and driving skills. This, ultimately,
results in improvement in one’s driving standards, all accomplished in a safe,
controlled environment. You can go as fast or as slow as you like and
still feature in the awards at the end of the year.
